Magnetic car phone holder UK: what to check before you buy

A magnetic car phone holder holds your phone with magnets instead of arms or clamps: you bring the phone close and it snaps on, then pull it off when you get out. In the UK they are a popular choice because they are quick, they keep the windscreen clear when fitted to a vent, and they work with hands-free use as the law expects. This guide covers the five things worth checking before you buy one, from any brand.
1. Where it mounts
- — Air vent: clips or hooks onto a vent blade. Keeps the phone low and the windscreen clear.
- — Dashboard: sticks on with adhesive. Can be placed anywhere flat, but the pad can be hard to remove later.
- — Windscreen: uses a suction cup. Easy to move, but it sits in your view of the road, which UK guidance says you must keep clear.
Whichever you choose, GOV.UK says the device must not block your view of the road and you must stay in full control of the car. Our guide to phone holders and UK law has the details.
2. Your phone and your case
MagSafe iPhones (iPhone 12 and later, but not the iPhone 16e or the SE models) have magnets built in and attach on their own. Other phones need a thin metal ring stuck on the back or on the case. A good holder includes one in the box. Put the ring in the middle, away from the camera: Apple says magnets or metal near the rear camera can affect image stabilisation and autofocus.
Cases matter too. A MagSafe-compatible case passes the magnets through. A thick case without magnets weakens the hold, so stick the ring on the outside of the case instead. Wallet cases and cards get in the way.
3. Your vents, for a vent mount
Vent mounts hold on in one of two ways. A hook reaches behind a horizontal slat and locks against it, which is very firm if there is space behind the slat. A clip squeezes the blade from the front, which suits thin, rounded or vertical blades. Look at your vents before you buy: the wrong fixing is a common reason a magnetic holder droops or rattles. Our hook or clip guide has a two-minute test you can do in the car.
4. Magnets and rotation
More magnets spread the hold across the back of the phone, and a ball joint lets you turn it to portrait or landscape. The SSUCTION mounts have 17 magnets and rotate 360°. Be wary of holders that quote big holding-force numbers without saying how they were measured: the case, the ring and the vent fit make more difference on the road.
5. Charging
Some magnetic holders charge the phone as well. Check two things: the output (the SSUCTION Wireless Charger gives up to 15W) and the car adapter it needs (for ours, a USB-C adapter of 9V 2A or more, not included). A charging disc that fits your existing mount means you can start with a holder and add charging later.
Buying from a UK seller
Buying from a UK business means UK delivery times and your Consumer Rights Act rights if anything is faulty. Check the returns window and who pays for the return. SSUCTION ships from the UK by Royal Mail, with 30-day returns and a free return label.
Not sure which holder suits your car? Email info@ssuction.com with a photo of your vents and your phone model, and we will tell you honestly, even if the answer is that a vent mount is not right for your car.
