Will a magnetic car mount work with my phone, and is it safe?

A magnetic mount is the quickest way to put a phone in a car: you bring the phone close and it snaps on. Whether it works well depends on your phone, your case, and where the magnets meet. Here is how to check before you buy.
iPhones with MagSafe
MagSafe iPhones have a ring of magnets built into the back, so they attach to a magnetic mount on their own, with nothing stuck on. According to Apple, that covers the iPhone 12 and later models, including the iPhone 17e.
Two exceptions are worth knowing about. The iPhone 16e does not have MagSafe magnets, and neither do the iPhone SE models. They will still work with a magnetic mount, using the metal ring described below.
Other phones, and phones without MagSafe
Every SSUCTION mount comes with a round metal ring. Stick it on the back of the phone, or on the outside of the case, and the mount has something to grip. This is how Android phones and older iPhones use a magnetic mount.
Put the ring in the middle of the back, not near the camera. Apple says strong magnets or magnetisable metal near the rear camera can interfere with the sensors that control optical image stabilisation and autofocus. Keeping the ring in the centre, away from the lenses, follows that advice.
Cases
- — MagSafe-compatible cases have magnets built in, so the phone attaches through the case as if it were bare.
- — A thick case without magnets weakens the hold. Stick the metal ring on the outside of the case instead.
- — Wallet cases or card holders between the phone and the mount get in the way of the magnets. Apple also warns that cards with magnetic strips or chips can be damaged if they sit between an iPhone and a MagSafe charger, so keep cards out of that gap.
Is it safe for the phone?
Apple designed MagSafe so that magnetic accessories can attach to the back of the iPhone. The specific caution Apple gives is about magnets or metal plates placed near the rear camera, which can interfere with image stabilisation and autofocus. Keep that area clear.
Charging on the go
The SSUCTION Wireless Charger is a thin magnetic disc that sits on either mount, with a built-in 1 m USB-C cable. It needs a USB-C car adapter of 9V 2A or more, which is not included. The phone charges where it sits, so there is no cable to plug in each time you get in.
