Qi wireless charging

Qi is the open wireless charging standard used by most phones that charge without a cable. Apple describes iPhones without MagSafe, such as the iPhone 16e, iPhone 11, iPhone X, XS, XR and iPhone 8 models, as Qi-compatible.

Qi chargers work by placing the phone's charging coil over the charger's coil. Without MagSafe magnets, the phone has to be lined up by hand or held in place, which is why magnetic mounts include a metal ring for phones without MagSafe.

Charging speed varies by phone, charger and power adapter. Apple notes that power and charge times are different when a non-MagSafe, Qi-compatible iPhone is charged on a MagSafe charger.
